Model Y by Tesla under scrutiny - does it truly deliver on its claimed performance?
Tesla Model Y undergoes facelift: New paint job, improved performance, and subtle design changes
By Patrick Broich
Tesla has refreshed its Model Y lineup with a new paint job, hardware modifications, and some design tweaks. The updated version, named Juniper, features a dual-motor setup and has been tested by ntv.de.
At first glance, the revamped Tesla Model Y may cause confusion, particularly from the front, prompting questions about the car's brand affiliation. The continuous light strips might not immediately suggest Tesla, making a newcomer from China seem more likely. However, a look at the rear of the vehicle reveals a more recognizable Tesla silhouette, despite the light strip. The large brand lettering aids in identification.
Those familiar with Tesla will recognize the Model Y, even without the branding, due to the central control unit, or touchscreen, remaining an eye-catcher. The driving mode selection, previously done via shift levers, is now controlled through a touch-sensitive monitor, similar to the Model S facelift. While this setup is elegant, concerns about the display's longevity persist. The traditional brake pedal offers the option to activate "D" in case of any display malfunction.
In terms of performance, the Model Y with the dual-motor configuration accelerates briskly, with all-wheel-drive and the largest battery offering potent performance. However, Tesla doesn't disclose the exact battery capacity, and the power output can only be estimated or verified through unofficial sources. Although this lack of transparency might raise eyebrows, Tesla does specify the standard 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.8 seconds for the Model Y.
A test drive revealed powerful acceleration, especially noticeable when the accelerator is suddenly depressed. The all-wheel-drive vehicle generates a discernible braking moment when reaching around 200 km/h (limited to 201 km/h), which is somewhat underwhelming. However, top speed and punch are satisfactory for everyday use.
Improvements in the Model Y facelift have made everyday driving better. The company claims that the Model Y is now significantly quieter than before, but this claim is difficult to verify without a comparison. The suspension comfort, though, has noticeably improved, smoothing the ride over rough roads.
Traditional steering wheel levers have been reintroduced for activating the turn signal, making it more convenient and practical. Two charging trays for wireless smartphone charging are also present, albeit available in previous models. New is the stylish ambient lighting in various colors, although the front LED strip may reflect disturbingly in the windshield at night.
One recurring criticism regarding the Model Y remains its absence of 800-volt fast-charging capabilities. With intensifying competition in charging performance and rising price pressure, Tesla's Model Y faces increasing challenges. While the base model begins at 45,970 euros, it offers plenty of power and space with a length of 4.79 meters and a wheelbase of 2.89 meters, ensuring a comfortable interior and over 2,000 liters of trunk volume.
Comparatively, the Skoda Enyaq, priced from 33,900 euros, and the Smart #5, priced at 55,400 euros, present competitive options, offering family-friendly features and greater charging performance. The Xpeng G6, an 800-volt charging-capable competitor, starts at 43,600 euros.
Tesla's entry-level SUV still offers a compelling package overall, but the growing competition and diminishing price advantage may force Tesla to deliver genuine model development with substantial innovations to maintain its market position. Although minor cosmetic changes will not suffice, Tesla may surprise us once again, as it did with the revolutionary Supercharger network at the outset.
