Municipal Election Disruption Investigated by Police in Münster - No Indications of Cyber Attack

Münster Police Investigating Technical Issues in Local Elections IT Service

The Münster Police's Cybercrime unit is currently investigating technical issues that occurred on the municipal IT service provider's website during the local elections. The investigation was initiated following disruptions in displaying election results between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM on election day. Some election results from municipalities in the Münsterland region could not be displayed due to the technical issues.

The Münster Police's Cybercrime unit, one of six units operating in various police headquarters since 2024, is well-equipped to respond swiftly to such IT disruptions. The head of the Cybercrime unit since 2024 is Meywirth. The investigation into the technical issues is being conducted by the "Digital Crime Scenes" intervention teams, which consist of IT specialists, analysts, and investigators.

Initial findings suggest no evidence of a cyberattack. However, the cause of the server overload during the election period from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM is currently under further investigation. The election data was never at risk during the incident.
