Malaysia Backs Tokyo Statement 2025 for Asia-Pacific's Digital Future

Malaysia has pledged to back the "Tokyo Statement 2025," which will be presented at the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministers' Meeting (APT-MM 2025) in Tokyo, from May 30 to 31, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed today.

The statement is geared towards fostering a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable digital infrastructure, paving the way for a more interconnected Asia-Pacific region, while capitalizing on burgeoning tech trends such as artificial intelligence (AI).

"The emphasis extends beyond infrastructure development to embrace sustainability and a shared vision of ensuring no community is left behind in the digital era," Fahmi said to Bernama.

He is leading the Malaysian delegation to APT-MM 2025, aiming to bolster regional cooperation in telecommunications and technology. The Tokyo Statement is set to highlight six essential areas: digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and international and regional cooperation.

The Madani government intends to share Malaysia's comprehensive approach to creating a secure digital environment. This will include stressing the significance of robust cybersecurity legislation, nationwide online safety campaigns, and regulatory frameworks ensuring accountability among online platform providers.

"This forum serves as a crucial platform to forge joint strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable, and secure digital future for the Asia-Pacific," Fahmi noted. He also emphasized the meeting's potential to amplify cooperation in one of the world's fastest-growing tech regions and support developing nations in capacity-building, technical, and regulatory aspects.

Meanwhile, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa spearheaded the Malaysian delegation at the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) on May 29, featuring representatives from the Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Established in 1979, the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) is an intergovernmental organization led by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union.
