NEC XON Launches Explosion-Proof Telecoms Cabinets to Combat Battery Theft

NEC XON, a collaboration between Telkom and Swiss Integr-8 Group, has launched a new generation of anti-theft telecoms cabinets to tackle battery theft and vandalism in South and Southern Africa. The cabinets, designed to withstand forced entry and explosives, aim to protect mobile network operators' assets, following significant losses reported by MTN and Vodacom in 2024.

The cabinets guarantee resilience against break-ins, ranging from 90 minutes to six hours, outlasting competing solutions. Each cabinet is backed by up to R290 000.00 insurance cover, included in the purchase price, providing financial protection if a breach occurs within the specified resilience time. Key features also include integrated monitoring sensors for real-time tracking, modular configurations for flexibility, and a standard-based design for easy integration with existing infrastructure. NEC XON is currently engaging with mobile network operators to run proof-of-concept deployments of the new cabinets.

NEC XON's new telecoms cabinets, with their robust design and comprehensive features, promise to enhance security and reduce losses from battery theft and vandalism. The company's collaboration with mobile network operators aims to demonstrate the cabinets' effectiveness in real-world scenarios.
