Nio Unveils Third-Generation ES8 SUV, Set for Sale Next Month
Nio Inc, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to launch its third-generation ES8 SUV on August 21, marking a significant milestone for the company. The event will take place in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan province, during Nio Day 2025.
The new ES8 is larger than its predecessor, with dimensions of 5,280 mm in length, 2,010 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 3,250 mm. This makes it the largest pure electric SUV in the Chinese market by size.
One of the key features of the new ES8 is its standard 100–102 kWh battery pack offering a CLTC range of approximately 635 kilometers. A future optional 120 kWh battery is also planned, which supports ultra-fast 5C charging, allowing for about 250 km of range after a 5-minute charge.
The ES8, Nio's first mass-produced model, launched on December 16, 2017, will now come with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, shared with the flagship ET9 sedan. The combined output is 520 kW (707 hp) and 700 Nm torque, enabling acceleration from 0-100 km/h in about 3.97 seconds.
The new ES8 is equipped with advanced technologies such as three LiDAR sensors, Nio’s in-house developed Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip, dual-chamber adjustable air suspension, and a spacious cargo area of 547 liters standard, expandable to over 3,200 liters with rear seats folded, plus a 230-liter front trunk (frunk).
Pre-sales for the new ES8 started in August 2025, and deliveries are expected from late September 2025. The model, with a starting price of RMB 498,000 ($69,450) including the battery pack, is positioned as a full-scenario technology flagship SUV.
In July alone, the ES8 delivered 1,090 units, marking a new high since January 2024. However, in the first seven months of this year, the ES8 delivered 4,199 units, a year-on-year decrease of 19.94 percent.
The new ES8 fleet, driven by Nio founder William Li, is currently traveling towards Mount Everest, adding an exciting twist to the upcoming launch event.
