new electric wagon model of the BYD Seal 06 DM-i hits the market with a starting cost of $15,320
In a cautious but innovative approach to wagon models, automakers are reintroducing and reinventing these vehicles with a strong emphasis on electrification, off-road capability, and versatility. The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition, the latest offering from BYD, is a prime example of this trend.
Officially launched today, the Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition is a new hybrid wagon model from BYD, priced at RMB 109,800 ($15,320). Available in three variants, this new addition to the Seal family is slightly larger than the regular Seal 06 DM-i in dimensions.
The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition is a variant of BYD's hybrid sedan, the Seal 06 DM-i. The Seal family, which originally started as an electric sedan, has expanded into a family of multiple models. Prior to the Seal 06 EV, the Seal family included the hybrid Seal 05 DM-i, the hybrid Seal 06 DM-i, the hybrid Seal 07 DM-i, the pure electric Seal 06 GT, and the pure electric Seal.
The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition is equipped with BYD's blade battery, offering a range of up to 2,000 km. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and has a fuel consumption of 3.15 liters per 100 kilometers when the battery is depleted, and a range of up to 2,000 kilometers when fully fueled and charged.
The Seal family has been performing exceptionally well. In June, the Seal family sold 44,387 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 81.86 percent and a month-on-month increase of 73.47 percent. In the first half of the year, the Seal family sold 202,601 units, up 152.54 percent year-on-year. Overall, the Seal family contributed 9.44 percent of BYD Group's sales during the same period.
The Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition is powered by a 1.5L gasoline engine and an electric motor with peak power outputs of 120 kW or 160 kW. This new hybrid wagon model is a testament to BYD's commitment to electrification and innovation in the automobile industry.
In China, where wagon-type vehicles are a niche market, as local consumers prefer conventional sedans and SUVs, the Seal 06 DM-i Touring Edition's launch marks a significant move by BYD to expand its offering in the market. Other automakers, such as Subaru and Stellantis (Jeep and Ram brands), are also joining the ranks of those launching wagon models, indicating a growing interest in this segment.
Industry-wide, the trend is toward electrification, intelligent design, and urban utility, with companies addressing challenges like range anxiety and battery technology, while also emphasizing vehicles that cater to multifaceted urban and adventure lifestyles. The resurgence of wagons is often coupled with hybrid or electric tech and crossover-like traits, reflecting a blend of traditional wagon practicality with modern automotive trends.
