NRL Achieves Energy Efficiency Milestones, Explores Green Hydrogen as India Targets Renewables

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has achieved remarkable milestones in energy efficiency and diversification, while India sets ambitious renewable energy targets. NRL, a key player in the North-east region's oil and gas sector since 1901, has significantly improved its Energy Intensity Index (EII) and is now exploring petrochemical production and green hydrogen.

NRL's EII has dropped from 116 in 2010 to 85 in 2018, four times the global average, saving around 100 TMT of fuel annually. This progress coincides with India's pledge at COP26 to boost non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030, meet 50% renewable energy, and reduce carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes. NRL is also leading the production of bio-ethanol from bamboo in the region, with the Assam Bio Refinery Private Limited (ABRPL) set to produce bio-ethanol, acetic acid, furfural, and 20 MW of green power.

In 2020-21, NRL recorded its highest-ever sales turnover (Rs. 18,543 crores), profits (Rs. 3,036 crores), and net-worth (Rs. 5,596 crores). The company is now working on producing green hydrogen through electrolysis, repurposing its grey hydrogen production facility. This aligns with India's rapid solar energy growth, which increased by 489% in five years, from 6.8 GW in 2016 to 40.1 GW in 2021. The North-east Region Vision 2020 also aims to significantly increase oil and gas production in the next four years.

NRL's energy efficiency improvements and diversification plans, coupled with India's ambitious renewable energy targets, signal a promising future for the North-east region's energy sector. As NRL explores petrochemical production and green hydrogen, it continues to build on its century-long legacy in the region.
