District of Herford Publishes Interactive Map Showing T-Mobile Network Coverage
The district of Herford, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, has taken a significant step towards transparency by publishing an interactive map displaying underserved areas and signal strength for LTE (4G) in the district. This map, available in the Geoportal of the district, was provided by Luc Niski.
District Administrator Jürgen Müller emphasized the importance of mobile communication, viewing it as essential infrastructure that complements broadband expansion and drives technological innovation forward. He expressed his desire to support network operators like T-Mobile in fixing the supply gaps shown on the map.
The data collection method involved determining the signal strength of mobile reception in every street that waste collection vehicles travel in the district. This data was collected in September 2024 using measuring boxes installed in waste collection vehicles. The resulting measurement data has few gaps due to the method used.
The data reflects the supply status for the year 2024 but will be collected regularly in the future. Jan Ahring, mobile manager at the district of Herford, mentioned that measurements will be conducted at certain intervals to ensure up-to-date data.
The interactive map offers a transparent overview of the current supply situation in the district, allowing citizens to enter their address and see the reception and signal strength in their area. The signal strength is color-coded according to its strength and broken down by providers like T-Mobile, Vodafone, and Telefónica.
It's worth noting that more than 98% of the land area in North Rhine-Westphalia is covered by at least one network provider with 4G or 5G, but there are still gaps. In fact, 11% of the land area in North Rhine-Westphalia is considered 'gray spots,' areas covered by at least one, but not all, network providers with 4G or 5G. On the other hand, 1.4% of the land area in North Rhine-Westphalia is considered 'white spots,' areas not covered by 4G or 5G.
The district of Herford cooperated with three active waste management companies in the district: Pre Zero, Berg, and the SWK of the city of Herford, in collecting data for mobile network coverage in the city area. However, the search results do not provide specific information about which network operators have supported the city of Herford in this endeavor. General information suggests that in Germany, major network operators like Telekom Deutschland and Telefonica (O2) are involved in improving mobile network coverage nationwide.
The data on mobile network coverage in the Herford district is now available in the Geoportal under the 'Life & Living' tab or via a direct link. Birgit Rehberg, head of the responsible department for district development and climate protection, emphasized that stable mobile coverage promotes digital education, safe work, and reduces unnecessary journeys, benefiting both people and the environment.
District Administrator Jürgen Müller views mobile measurements as an important issue for improving connectivity, promoting economic growth, making education more accessible, and enhancing emergency communication. He believes that by providing this data, the district is taking a significant step towards ensuring that all its citizens have access to reliable mobile communication.
