The allure of bogus online stores has snared many a shopper, with 24% of Germans discovering this the hard way, as per a survey carried out by Schufa in February, involving a thousand adults. Unsurprisingly, 25% know someone from their inner circle who has succumbed to the same trickery.
The financial toll can be steep: 61% of those duped reported experiencing financial loss – often because goods either didn't arrive or were subpar.
Common fraud tactics include impersonation (scamming), identity theft, and trapping unsuspecting users in long-term subscriptions, with their costs only gradually revealing themselves.
In nearly a third of online fraud cases (34%), the loss ranges between 100 and 1,000 euros, while a quarter (28%) suffer losses between 1,000 and 10,000 euros. An unfortunate 4% have lost over 10,000 euros.
Victims often become unwitting accomplices, inadvertently disclosing sensitive information like passwords (16%), bank data or credit card information (17%), and personal data such as addresses and dates of birth (19%).
To evade the clutches of cybercrime, consumers predominantly rely on secure passwords (58%). A third (35%) of the victims have updated their login details after encountering online fraud.
