Picnik Photo Editing Site Closing Down: Exploring Reasons and Recommended Alternatives
In a surprising move, the free online photo editing service Picnik is set to close on April 16, 2012. The news has left many users, including a customer named 'Kate,' feeling disappointed and upset.
Picnik, known for its user-friendly interface and personalization options, such as adding special effects and frames to images, has been a popular alternative to services like FotoFlexer. Its closure comes after Google's acquisition of the service in 2010.
Google, which offers a variety of services and products, including website traffic analytics software, email programs, and credit card selection services, has been integrating Picnik into Google+. The service was integrated starting April 16, 2012, and Picnik's photo editing capabilities will be incorporated into a feature called 'Creative Kit'.
However, some users feel like they are being pushed into using Google+ unwillingly. With over 1800 comments expressing dissatisfaction on the Picnik site, it's clear that the closure of the service has caused a stir among its user base.
To ease the transition, Google has provided advance notice to Picnik users, created an export feature called 'Takeout' for users to save their files, and even made premium features free as a parting gift. Additionally, alternatives to Picnik such as PicMonkey, LunaPic, iPiccy, Phixr, Pixlr, BeFunky, and WebFetti's Photo Editor are available for users seeking to continue their photo editing activities.
Despite these efforts, the closure of Picnik has left many users, like 'Kate,' expressing their love for the service and their dislike for Google+. As the date of closure approaches, it remains to be seen how Picnik users will adapt to the changes.
