Portugal Investment Benefits Highlighted by MOBI.E for Corporate Purchase Officers
Portugal's electric mobility market has been making waves across Europe, with a significant growth that has positioned it as a reference model for countries like Spain. The market, which currently boasts approximately 1,762 fast charging stations and 252 ultra-fast charging stations, makes up 37.8% of the total network.
The growth in this sector is mainly due to competitive advantages and facilities available to charging point operators (CPOs) in Portugal. One key factor is the absence of peak demand charges, allowing CPOs to install more high-capacity charging stations.
MOBI.E, a central player in Portugal's electromobility development, has been instrumental in the expansion of the country's charging infrastructure since 2010. The company's mission is to facilitate market development and ensure that electric mobility is an accessible option for everyone. MOBI.E has made investments to guarantee at least one charging station in each of Portugal's 308 municipalities.
By the end of September 2024, more than 4,264,000 charging sessions had been completed on the MOBI.E network. The network saw a 66% increase in recharges in August 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, indicating a strong and growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in Portugal.
Operators, under the MOBI.E model, are not required to bear high fixed costs of connecting to the power supply, such as grid connection costs. This allows them to install more charging stations at a lower cost. Moreover, the separation of the functions of the energy manager and marketer allows CPOs to focus on managing charging stations without high fixed costs associated with electricity supply.
The MOBI.E business model benefits energy marketers (eMSPs) by providing an expanded market where they can sell energy not only at public stations but also at private facilities. This allows eMSPs to more effectively retain their customers and compete in the market.
The existence of a single distribution network operator in Portugal simplifies the connection and power management of charging stations, allowing operators to better plan their investments. Transparency and accessibility are key points of the MOBI.E public company model, with real-time information about the availability, enabled power, and use of charging stations available through their website, encouraging competition in the sector.
As of the latest published figures, there are 5,209 publicly accessible stations and 9,124 available charging points on the MOBI.E network. With more than 9,300 charging points, Portugal now provides users with confidence that a station will always be available wherever they go.
In a low demand context, this model acts as an incentive for operators to set up charging stations, as fixed costs are relatively low despite possible low utilization. The MOBI.E management platform establishes a direct connection with the energy sector, allowing the deduction of energy consumed in electric mobility from the total supply, creating a specific electricity market for electromobility.
In August 2022, 77,774 megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy was consumed on the MOBI.E network, an increase of over 80% compared to the same month in 2023. This growth indicates a promising future for Portugal's electric mobility market, which continues to be a beacon of success in Europe.
