Prepared for a Compact Electric Vehicle Truck in the Future? The 2027 Rivian R2T Steps Forward to Fill That Specialized Market Segment

Preparing for the future, the 2027 Rivian R2T is set to meet the growing demand for mid-sized electric vehicles, aiming to conquer the niche market.

Rivian, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer known for its adventurous SUVs and pickups, is set to launch its R2T midsize electric pickup in 2027, following the R2S SUV which is expected to hit the market a year earlier, in 2026.

The R2S SUV, priced at $45,000, is anticipated to lead the way, offering a novel EV alternative for shoppers tired of the ubiquitous Tesla Model Y. The R2T, with a starting price around $45,000, will join the fray in 2027, promising a balance of accessibility, range, and performance.

The R2T is expected to boast a range of approximately 330 miles, a 0-60 mph acceleration time under three seconds, and a roomy interior with a 5-seat configuration. Sustainable, upcycled interior materials will add an eco-friendly touch, while maintaining the "muscle truck" American style.

Compared to other midsize electric pickups on the market, the Rivian R2T is positioned as a more affordable, yet still performance-oriented vehicle. Its estimated price point of around $45,000 undercuts many current electric pickups, which often start above $50,000.

The R2T will forgo the quad-motor setup and fancy hydro-pneumatic suspension of the R1T, instead using new Rivian motors dubbed "Maximus" and a more traditional, passive suspension design. It will also make use of the same new platform and powertrains as the R2S.

Off-road capabilities are not compromised, as the R2T's bed is expected to be around 4 feet, and it is anticipated to be highly capable off-road, just like its big brother. The R2T will be available with single-motor rear-wheel-drive or dual- and tri-motor all-wheel-drive options, offering versatility for different driving conditions.

The R2T will combine the hardware of the R2S with Rivian's established pickup knowhow. It is expected to be able to crest at least 330 miles of range in its most efficient format, making it a game changer in the midsize electric pickup segment compared to pricier competitors like the Ford Lightning or GMC Canyon EV, which tend to have higher starting prices and similar or slightly lower ranges.

Rivian's strategy appears to focus on delivering premium EV features at a more affordable entry price. With the R2S and R2T, the company aims to make electric vehicles accessible to a wider audience, potentially revolutionising the automotive industry. The R2T is expected to go on sale in the spring of 2027.
