Producing Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles from Pininfarina, Competitors to Tesla's Electric Cars, Gear Up for Manufacture
The automotive industry is abuzz with the latest development in the hydrogen market. Namx, a Moroccan company in partnership with Italian car design firm Pininfarina, has unveiled a prototype of their debut hydrogen-powered vehicle, the HUV.
The HUV, four years in the making, boasts a powerful 550 horsepower and a remarkable range of nearly 500 miles on a single charge, thanks to its six interchangeable hydrogen tanks added to the main tank. With this impressive range, the HUV can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it a formidable competitor in the market.
Industry partners, including Michelin and Areva, have supported Namx in the development of the HUV, with the vehicle being produced in Africa and Europe. The HUV's partial power comes from a patented removable tank system, ensuring easy access to hydrogen fuel.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is aware of the upcoming presence of hydrogen-powered vehicles in the automotive market. The HUV's production, as reported on December 12, 2022, signals a potential threat to Tesla's electric vehicles (EVs), especially considering the short refueling time of a few minutes, a significant advantage of hydrogen-powered models over EVs.
KPMG's survey of 1,000 auto executives found that 78% believe hydrogen fuel cells have a better long-term future than EVs. This sentiment is echoed by Namx, who hopes the HUV will contribute to the worldwide push for zero-emission car travel.
The HUV is set for production from the fourth quarter of 2025, with a price range of around $68,000 to $100,000, depending on added options. As the hydrogen market continues to shape, keep up with the latest news at our website.
