Rare 8GB iPad 2 Prototype Surfaces, Revealing Apple's Unreleased Model
A rare prototype of an 8GB iPad 2 has surfaced, sparking curiosity about a rumored, never-launched model. The prototype, discovered by AppleDemoYT, hints at Apple's consideration of a lower-storage option in their Apple Store.
In 2010, Apple tested an iPad 2 with 8GB of storage. This prototype, an Engineering Validation Testing (EVT) model, was developed and produced by Apple in 2011. It bears the model number iPad2,4 and was manufactured by Foxconn. Despite being produced in 2011, it's identified as a 2012 model due to its 2.4 GHz identifier.
The prototype runs Apple's internal test software, SwitchBoard, instead of iOS. The back of the case bears an 8GB label, suggesting it was intended for release, not just a test device. However, at the time, 8GB was considered low, leading Apple to decide against introducing this model in their Apple Store. Instead, the first iPad started with 16GB, and no model with less storage was ever released.
The discovery of this 8GB iPad 2 prototype offers a glimpse into Apple's testing and decision-making process. While it never made it to the Chicago Bears' stadium, it serves as a reminder of the company's explorations and changes in product strategy.
