Redesigned CarPlay within a Tesla using Apple's Liquid Glass technology revealed
Tesla's Android Project Introduces Updated CarPlay Interface
In an exciting development, the Tesla Android Project, an open-source setup created by developer Michał Gapiński, has unveiled a major redesign of Apple's CarPlay interface. This update, known as "Liquid Glass", has been observed running on Tesla vehicles, including the Model Y.
The Tesla Android Project is not affiliated with Tesla or Google. Instead, it utilizes a Raspberry Pi or Compute Module 4 for connection, allowing Teslas to run Android apps, including CarPlay and Android Auto, through the built-in web browser. This setup also supports GPS, high-quality audio, and streaming services.
The new CarPlay design offers a sleek appearance and has been noted to blend well with Tesla's UI, particularly when using black or white backgrounds. The team behind the project has also highlighted improvements to Apple Music within CarPlay, stating that it loads faster and works better than Tesla's native version of the app.
Dual-screen functionality is another key feature of the Tesla Android Project, available across all Tesla models, including the Cybertruck. This allows for a seamless integration of Android and Apple apps within the Tesla infotainment system.
However, it's important to note that as of late July 2025, Tesla's Android Project and its compatibility with iOS 26, CarPlay’s new "Liquid Glass" look, and Android 14/16 (now Android 16 in beta) remain limited or underdeveloped. Tesla vehicles do not natively support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, including the latest iOS 26 or upcoming Android 16/14 versions. Instead, third-party solutions like the T2C CarPlay Box allow plug-and-play Android or Apple CarPlay integration with Tesla cars, but this is an external hardware accessory rather than an official Tesla OS feature.
The demonstration of the updated CarPlay interface was done using a large screen, providing a clear view of the new design. Despite the limitations in native compatibility, the Tesla Android Project offers an innovative way for Tesla owners to enjoy the latest features of CarPlay within their vehicles.
