Revved Up: The Hyundai Tucson - Mid-Size SUV Now With a Hybrid Twist

By: Patrick Broich, Kronberg im Taunus

In the world of reliable, stylish, and affordable vehicles, Hyundai shines brightly. But among all their offerings, the mid-size SUV Tucson reigns supreme, taking the road by storm. Let's find out why!

Ever wondered which Hyundai you'll spot most often cruising the streets? Not the electric Ioniq models, not the i20 or i30, and not even the chic Kona. It's none other than the somewhat modest Tucson, a name that your average citizen might stumble over. So, what sets the Tucson apart from the rest of Hyundai's esteemed lineup? Quite possibly, the sweet combination of comfort, space, and a price that doesn't burn a hole in your wallet. Believe it or not, this 4.52-meter-long all-rounder, straddling the border between compact and mid-size classes, is available from a wallet-friendly 35,740 euros. Included in that price are a 160-horsepower gasoline engine, a manual transmission, plentiful displays, LED headlights, navigation, parking sensors, a rearview camera, and an aesthetically pleasing design that exudes a touch of Europe.

Alas, ntv.de wasn't fortunate enough to road-test the base variant this time around. But the good folks at Hyundai have some exciting news for us: the powerful hybrid model can now be paired with front-wheel drive, driving down its price significantly compared to the all-wheel-drive versions. While the priciest all-wheel-drive Tucson leaves buyers with a hefty bill of at least 49,800 euros, the front-wheel-drive iteration sets you back a comparatively affordable 44,690 euros. That's thanks to the lower trim level "Select." The burning question, however, is whether this front-wheel-drive version offers a worthy compromise for the savings.

Gripping the Road: Front-Wheel Drive and Hybrid Power

The success of the front-wheel-drive model depends on your right foot. Bear in mind that the front tires have plenty of work on their hands when they're saddled with 367 Newton meters of system torque. Intriguingly, the new front-wheel-drive model is said to top highway speeds 0.2 seconds quicker than the all-wheel drive version, as per the manufacturer - a feat made possible by its 60-kilogram lighter weight.

Traction can become scarce as both engines are put to the test. The tricky part isn't simply accelerating past stoplights; even a smooth overtaking maneuver at low speeds can catch you off guard in the steering wheel. That said, it's essential to give credit where it's due. In day-to-day driving, the drive works pretty seamlessly, offering prompt acceleration and minimal power interruptions, as long as you don't push things too hard.

The six-speed automatic transmission ensures smooth gear changes - not a dual-clutch, which causes softer transitions here and there. But if you're already opting for a plug-in hybrid, it's best to prioritize electric driving whenever possible. Ideally, with regenerated electricity. Unfortunately, the battery can only store 13.8 kWh, but it can be fully charged in under two hours with a 7.2 kW charger, provided one is available nearby. The electric range clocks in at a respectable 70 kilometers. Since the electric motor delivers 98 horsepower and 304 Newton meters, the propulsion is far from slow, although both engines work better together. The top speed of 186 km/h requires the presence of the 160-horsepower gasoline engine for good measure.

When it comes to comfort, the Tucson doesn't disappoint, offering comfortable seats, a plush ride, and an optional adaptive suspension system that offers a comfortable ride fit for long trips. It's well-equipped with infotainment features, and its interior exudes a premium feel without the necessary premium price tag. Space-wise, the Tucson offers plenty of room for both passengers and cargo, with a cargo volume of 1,721 liters with the rear seats folded down, and 600 liters even with them in an upright position. That's not to mention its powerful gasoline engine's ability to tow up to 1.2 tons, making the Tucson a practical choice for most families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Embrace the Hyundai Wave: A Wave of Innovation and Value

The Hyundai Tucson's popularity may also stem from its harmonious blend of comfort, style, and practicality, along with its diverse powertrain options. Whether you prefer electric, hybrid gasoline engines, or the traditional diesel route, Hyundai caters to all tastes. Their plug-in hybrid variant attracts fleet drivers thanks to its significantly lower tax liabilities (0.5-percent rule). But don't just take our word for it. Experience the Hyundai wave for yourself and witness the brand's relentless pursuit of innovation, reliability, and value, all for an unbeatable price.
