Sick of that pesky blue ring? Meta AI, the AI-powered assistant, has landed in Germany, bringing searches, text compositions, and question-answering to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. But what if you want to ditch the bot? Here's how to manage it.
You can't exactly exile Meta AI — as of now, there's no magic unicorn option to switch it off. No settings menu or chat chat-ending emoji will do the trick. However, you can take a step back and mute the automaton.
Hiding Meta AI on WhatsApp
- Tap the blue ring in the chat summary to open the Meta AI chat.
- Skip typing and tap the name at the top edge.
- Settings for this botty chat will appear, just like those of a real pal. Select "Mute" to hide the AI for a certain period or forever.
- The ring will still flash in the chat summary, but at least it won't bother you anymore! Plus, if it's added to a group chat, it'll be muted for you too.
Other Hideouts
Meta AI is ubiquitous — it's even creeping into the search bar on top. Here's how to manage it on Instagram and Facebook:
- Instagram: Tap the search bar (blue circle at the top) > tap the arrow to open Meta AI > tap the info icon > select "Mute," then choose "until I change it" for indefinite muting.
- Facebook: Open Messenger > Tap your profile picture > scroll to "AI assistants" > toggle off "AI in chats" to disable AI features in your conversations.
EU's AI Struggle
Meta AI's tardy arrival in Europe comes with privacy concerns raised by the EU, which had to be addressed first. Meta assured that chat data aren't used to train the AI — except those sent directly to the AI bot. Compared to the US, its capabilities are more limited here, with no automatic voice message transcription or summarization of long group chats available yet.
