Tesla's Full Self-Driving System Nears Launch in Australia
In a significant development for electric vehicle enthusiasts Down Under, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is officially close to launching in the Australian market. The news comes as the company reported a boost in sales, particularly due to the successful launch of the refreshed Model Y.
According to Tesla's Australian country director, Thom Drew, there are no regulatory issues preventing the FSD launch, and the rollout will begin with vehicles equipped with the latest Hardware 4 (HW4), such as the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, which have been delivered in Australia since late 2023 and 2024 respectively.
The rollout will be phased, initially requiring a safety monitor to be present, similar to Tesla's robotaxi service approach seen in the US. Over time, broader availability will expand. The Australian National Transport Commission (NTC) is currently working with federal and state authorities on legal and safety frameworks to support autonomous vehicle operations.
The news of the impending FSD launch in Australia follows Tesla's strong sales performance in May 2025. The company recorded its strongest sales month in nearly a year, with 3,897 vehicles delivered, a large increase from just 500 vehicles delivered in April 2025. The Model Y accounted for 3,580 of these sales, an increase of 123% from the 1,609 units sold in May 2024.
The new Model Y's performance in May 2025 was its best in two years, and it saw a significant drop in year-to-date sales, down just 27.4%, compared to the Model 3's 71% decline to 2,583 units year-to-date.
The strong sales figures for the Model Y can be attributed to its highly anticipated arrival in Australian showrooms, as well as the fact that some delivery centres reportedly handed over 70 to 100 new Model Y units daily following their arrival from China.
In addition to the FSD launch and Model Y sales success, Tesla recently released its first video showcasing FSD operating on Melbourne streets. As part of a promotional offer, Tesla is also offering three months of FSD to buyers who use a referral link.
However, it's worth noting that Tesla's year-to-date figures in Australia are down 48% compared to the same period in 2024. Some speculate that Elon Musk's participation in U.S. politics and his close association with President Donald Trump may have had an effect on sales in Australia.
Regardless of the potential political implications, the launch of Tesla's FSD system in Australia is an exciting development for the electric vehicle market in the country. With the final stages of validation nearly complete, public use of the FSD system is expected soon, marking a significant step forward in the adoption of autonomous vehicles.
