Revealed in China: Extended Ranges for Tesla Model Y and Model 3+

Tesla Unveils Long-Range Model Y L and Model 3+ Variants in China

Tesla has confirmed the addition of the Model Y L and Model 3+ variants to its China lineup, as revealed in regulatory filings released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). These filings also provide official range figures for the upcoming electric vehicles (EVs).

The Model Y L, a larger six-seat SUV, boasts an 82 kWh battery and a China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) range of 751 km. The Model 3+, on the other hand, offers a rear-wheel drive variant with a slightly smaller battery around 78.4 kWh and higher CLTC ranges of up to 830 km. Both models utilize LG-sourced ternary NMC batteries optimized for the Chinese market.

The Model Y L, unveiled last month in China, is now Tesla's longest-range SUV in the country. It features a curb weight of 2,088 kg and a battery pack energy density of 176 Wh/kg. The Model 3+, if launched, would be the highest-range Tesla ever offered in China, and possibly the highest-range EV available in the country altogether.

The Model Y L uses an 82 kWh LG NMC battery pack, paired with dual motors producing 142 kW (front) and 198 kW (rear). The Model 3+ Long Range models in China have two variants with CLTC range figures of 830 km and 800 km.

The regulatory filings also reveal Tesla's strategy to offer more capable, premium long-range EVs across its lineup in China. Real-world testing of the Model Y L is underway, as it was recently spotted in the wild. The Model Y L and Model 3+ variants were formally announced weeks prior to the release of these regulatory filings.

The filings indicate that Tesla is making significant efforts to improve the efficiency and range of its vehicles in the Chinese market. The Model Y L's dimensions are 4976 mm (length) / 1920 mm (width) / 1668 mm (height), with a wheelbase of 3040 mm. It offers seating for six adults and has a storage capacity of 2,539 liters. The Model 3+ has a curb weight of 1,760 kg and features a slightly higher pack energy density of 175 Wh/kg.

The regulatory filings provide specifications for the Model Y L and Model 3+ variants, offering insight into Tesla's commitment to delivering high-performance, long-range EVs to the Chinese market. The data was released as part of the MIIT's latest vehicle batch eligible for purchase tax exemptions.

  1. The newly unveiled Model Y L and Model 3+ variants, with their advanced ternary NMC batteries and improved efficiency, represent Tesla's ongoing commitment to offering lifestyle-enhancing gadgets like electric-vehicles equipped with long-range capabilities.
  2. As Tesla expands its lineup in China with offerings like the Model Y L, a six-seat SUV boasting excellent range, car enthusiasts can expect the rise of electric-vehicles to become integrated into their daily technology-driven lives.
