Rivian's New R2 EV Expands into Europe in Late 2025
Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is set to expand its reach with the R2, a new midsize model that will be available in single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations. The R2 is Rivian's first step towards international expansion and is expected to launch in Europe around late 2025 or early 2026.
The R2 will be built on Rivian's new midsize platform and will cater to the European market, including right-hand drive versions for the UK. To facilitate this expansion, Rivian will need to make significant alterations to its factory tooling. CEO RJ Scaringe has positioned the R2 and the upcoming R3 as 'highly aspirational but highly attainable', with the R2 expected to start at around $45,000 in the US and between €40,000 and €50,000 in Europe.
Production of the R2 will be split between a new facility in Georgia and an expanded line in Normal, Illinois. Rivian aims to launch the R2 in the first half of 2026 to boost sales and international relevance. The R2 will be primarily sold in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, with European availability expected around late 2025 or early 2026.
The R2 is Rivian's first step into the European market, offering a more affordable electric vehicle option. With its competitive pricing and multiple motor configurations, the R2 is poised to make a significant impact on the European EV market when it launches in late 2025 or early 2026.
