Scottish Man Extradited to US for Alleged Role in $26M Crypto Heist

A 23-year-old Scottish man, Tyler Robert Buchanan, has been extradited from Spain to the U.S. to face cybercrime charges. Buchanan is alleged to be part of the notorious Spider group, accused of stealing millions in cryptocurrency through SIM-swapping attacks.

Buchanan's extradition was reported last week. He was arrested in Spain in June 2024 while attempting to board a flight to Italy. His residence was searched, and authorities confiscated at least 20 digital devices.

Buchanan is charged with wire fraud, conspiracy, and identity theft. He and four other alleged Spider group members were charged in November 2024. The group, composed mainly of young men aged 19 to 22 from the U.S. and UK, has been involved in hacking and extortion, affecting many international companies. Buchanan is suspected of involvement in the 2023 ransomware attacks against MGM and Caesars casinos in Las Vegas.

Buchanan's extradition follows the arrest of Noah Michael Urban in Florida in January 2024 and several other young British members in the UK and Spain. The Spider group is accused of hacking into dozens of companies worldwide, stealing over $26 million in cryptocurrency through SIM-swapping attacks.
