Seagate Executive Suggests Development of 150 Terabyte Hard Drives Due to Innovative 15 Terabyte Disks, Stating It Will Take Approximately a Decade before Realization.

Gigantic Seagate Hard Drives in the Horizon: All the Way up to 150TB by 2035!

  • Mozaic platform springs into action, enabling 4TB platters, with 10TB disks on the horizon by 2028
  • Mozaic 4 inbound by 2026, Mozaic 5 targeting late 2027 qualifications

At Seagate's 2025 Investor and Analyst Conference, CEO Dr. Dave Mosley and Chief Technology Officer Dr. John Morris laid out an ambitious hard drive innovation blueprint.

Their presentation hinted at the likelihood of game-changing 150TB hard drives - the largest ever - by revolutionizing 15TB platters. But they warned that this landmark won't materialize before 2035.

The key to unlocking this future lies in Seagate's HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, currently being deployed via the company's Mozaic platform.

10TB per platter on the horizon for 2028

"Confidently, we can project our product roadmap through Mozaic 5. Notably, the design space for granular iron platinum media in Mozaic 3 looks highly promising to deliver up to 10 terabytes per disk," said Dr. Morris.

2028 is the projected timeline for reaching the 10TB-per-disk milestone. "We're affirmative that we can provide a path to 10 terabytes per disk within this timeframe. With spin-stand demonstrations of new technologies typically taking five years to reach product qualification, this hypothesis is tenable," Morris added.

Moving beyond 10TB, Seagate is investigating ways to extend the capabilities of its Iron Platinum media further.

"We have conviction that there's another level of extension of the granular iron platinum architecture that could theoretically reach as high as 15 terabytes per disk," said the CTO.

A 15TB-per-disk breakthrough would clear the path for 150TB hard drives by stacking 10 platters per unit. Yet, a word of caution, "Beyond 15 terabytes per disk might call for some disruptive innovation," Dr. Morris cautioned.

Dr. Dave Mosley, Seagate's CEO, shared this forward-looking view, mentioning, "We're now well-versed in reaching 4 and 5, and even farther with the HAMR technology."

"It won't be a walk in the park, but I'm optimistic that this will keep us on a competitive cost trajectory that no other technology is likely to surpass in the next decade, probably beyond," added Mosley.

Seagate's audacity is supported by recent achievements. Mozaic 3, delivering 3TB per platter, is already in volume production, with Mozaic 4 (4TB per platter) due for customer qualification in the next quarter.

Meanwhile, the company anticipates initiating volume shipments of Mozaic 4 drives in the first half of 2026. Mozaic 5, focusing on 5TB per platter, is set for customer qualification in late 2027 or early 2028.

Keep in mind that 150TB drives based on 15TB platters are not imminent. As Morris highlighted, "This (10TB per platter) is merely another step in the journey that we undertake to support our strategy... it requires time. There's still much progress to be made to reach that point."
