Serbia's Prosumer Scene Booms: School Pioneers Solar Power
Serbia's prosumer scene is booming, with 5,310 registered prosumers and a total installed capacity exceeding 113 MW. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has played a significant role in this growth, recently completing a project in Ruma. The Dušan Jerković High School has become the first in the Srem region to install a solar power plant on its roof, a move that will significantly reduce its electricity bill.
The project, implemented in cooperation with the Elektropionir energy cooperative and funded by German Development Cooperation and the European Union, has transformed the school into a prosumer. The 10 kW solar power plant will harness the sun's energy, contributing to Serbia's renewable energy targets. This initiative follows a nationwide trend, with most prosumers being households (3,848), followed by legal entities (1,457). The school is currently in the process of obtaining prosumer status.
Experts estimate that installing solar panels on just 10% of Serbia's suitable rooftops could generate a significant 6 GW of solar power capacity. With an estimated 600 square kilometers of rooftop surface area suitable for solar panel installation, the potential for solar power in Serbia is vast.
The Dušan Jerković Primary School in Ruma has pioneered a sustainable future for education in the Srem region. By harnessing the sun's power, the school reduces its environmental impact and saves on electricity costs. This project serves as a testament to the potential of solar energy in Serbia and the benefits of prosumer status for both individuals and institutions.
