Server undergoing cyber assault during Sunday's election results announcement
In an unusual turn of events, a cyber attack was suspected on the servers of IT-NRW during the election held on September 15, 2025. The technical issue disrupted the display of live election results briefly between 18:00 and 18:15 for a few minutes.
The root of the problem was traced to a municipal data center in Kamp-Lintfort. However, upon investigation, no evidence of a cyberattack was found, and no unauthorized access to the system was gained.
The spokesperson for the data center in Kamp-Lintfort made this statement, clarifying that the server capacity ultimately did not suffice for the high volume of data. The municipal IT service provider Citeq in Münsterland also experienced similar issues, with unusually many accesses to their servers.
Despite these challenges, the transmission, collection, and evaluation of results were not affected. The Rheinische Post reported the incident first, and it was later confirmed that approximately three dozen communities in the districts of Kleve, Wesel, and Viersen also experienced problems displaying live election results.
Authorities suspect a targeted attack, and the state criminal police are now involved in the investigation. It's important to note that as of now, there is no information about an actual perpetrator behind this suspected attack on the 2025 election results in North Rhine-Westphalia on September 15. The search results focus on election outcomes and voter turnout without mentioning any attack or responsible party.
