Sony introduces an unprecedented 'timeline' narrative for The Last of Us Part 2 game.
In a groundbreaking move, Naughty Dog has introduced a significant update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, offering players the opportunity to experience the game's story in a chronological order for the first time. This update, titled 'Chronological Experience', is now available on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) as of July 8, 2025.
The update, part of Patch 2.1.0 on PS5 and Patch 1.5 on PC, not only allows for a linear playthrough but also includes unlockable skins and trophies. This restructuring of the game's narrative may provide players with "even deeper insight" into the sequel's intricate plot, particularly parallels between protagonists Ellie and Abby and close encounters between them.
Naughty Dog's editorial content manager, Jonathon Dornbush, shared that the studio "always wondered" what it would be like for players to experience the story in chronological order. The development of the Chronological Experience was a collaborative effort with Nixxes, a Dutch company that Sony acquired in June 2021.
It's worth noting that Naughty Dog recommends new players to the game to first play through the story "as was originally developed." The original structure, where players first play as Ellie and then as new character Abby, remains "very intentional and core" to the game's themes and narrative.
Meanwhile, the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part II is splitting its narrative across several seasons. The season 2 finale reached 3.7 million viewers, marking a 30 percent drop compared to the season's premiere. Co-writers Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, who also acted as co-creator of the franchise and co-writer of Part II, respectively, announced their departures from the show ahead of season 3.
Interestingly, season 3 of the HBO adaptation is expected to follow Abby's perspective instead, which is how the game is originally structured. The Chronological Experience update showcases an intention to continue revisiting the game five years later.
In other news, a physical edition of The Last of Us Complete, which bundles both remastered versions in one package, will be available on July 10. Naughty Dog's co-founders, Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, were both credited as executive producers and their contributions include writing and directing in the case of Druckmann.
The Chronological Experience update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a testament to Naughty Dog's commitment to innovative gameplay and narrative structures, even five years after the game's initial release. This update is not as common among studios, especially in reframing a non-linear narrative, making it a unique offering in the gaming industry.
Technology has played a significant role in the refresh of The Last of Us Part II Remastered, as the update titled 'Chronological Experience' includes unlockable skins and trophies, restructuring the game's narrative for a linear playthrough. This innovative gadget, part of Patch 2.1.0 on PS5 and Patch 1.5 on PC, exemplifies the continued advancement in gaming technology.
