Sony's high-performance cinematic device, the 12K FX8, is now in the spotlight, ready to make waves in the film industry.

The tech world is buzzing with anticipation as Sony is rumoured to unveil its latest addition to the Cinema Line, the Sony FX8, at the IBC Show in September in Amsterdam. Known for using the IBC as a launchpad for its product announcements, Sony's timing for this reveal lines up with its history of unveiling groundbreaking technology.

The Sony FX8 is rumoured to be a significant step up from its predecessors, the FX9 and FX6, offering a smart balance between image performance, usability, and Sony's trusted color science. The camera is expected to be a full-frame 12K cinema camera, featuring a 16:9 cropped 12K full-frame CMOS sensor with approximately 96 million pixels and a 3:2 aspect ratio.

Key rumoured specifications include external 3.8K 16-bit RAW output via SDI, supporting up to 120 fps. However, it's important to note that the FX8 will not have internal RAW or X-OCN recording, only XAVC codec internally. Recording in 8K at 30p or 4K at 60p in full-frame and Super 35 modes is also supported. A full-frame crop 3.8K mode enables 4K 120p recording.

One of the most exciting features of the FX8 is its new in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system, which addresses criticism of previous models lacking effective stabilization. The camera is also expected to feature a custom-designed full-frame sensor promising improved color science and dynamic range tailored for dedicated cinema/video use rather than hybrid stills and video.

While the official release date and announcement are anticipated at IBC 2025, rumours suggest an earlier planned announcement date around March 26, 2025, may not have materialized publicly. Early review/test units reportedly exist, and the camera is described as aimed squarely at professional filmmakers.

Kim Bunermann, a photographer, editor, and writer with work published internationally, is one of the many industry professionals eagerly awaiting the official unveiling of the Sony FX8. With its advanced video features and potential to offer four times more resolution than the FX9, the FX8 is poised to make a significant impact in the world of cinema and video production.
