Space technology startup OrbitAID's fresh Research and Development site is launched in Bengaluru by the head of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)
OrbitAid Aerospace, a leading player in sustainable space operations, has inaugurated a new research and development (R&D) facility in Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone in their journey to make India a global champion of space sustainability.
The 6500 sq. ft. facility, which was officially opened by Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), boasts a high-end control room, a class 10000 cleanroom, and fuel transfer facilities for assembling and integrating satellites.
Dr. Narayanan emphasised the significance of providing services such as life extension for satellites in shaping the future of India's space ecosystem. He also spoke about the importance of developing technologies such as docking & refueling interfaces, a focus area for OrbitAid.
OrbitAid's Founder & CEO, Sakthikumar Ramachandran, stated that the facility marks a new chapter in OrbitAID's journey. He expressed pride in the company's efforts to advance sustainable space operations through innovative on-orbit fueling solutions.
The R&D facility is India's largest commercial and one of the world's biggest for Rendezvous Proximity Operations & Docking (RPOD) infrastructure. OrbitAid's goal is to build a circular economy for the global space tech ecosystem, with a focus on ensuring sustainable satellite operations, reducing space debris, and enhancing the long-term viability of space infrastructure.
OrbitAid is positioned to provide life extension services for current and upcoming satellites in both Indian and global markets with their TRL 7 docking and refueling interface, the Standard Interface Docking and Refueling Port (SIDRP).
The company is also planning to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu, establishing a manufacturing facility, and aims to expand its operations internationally. Bhaskar Majumdar, Managing Partner of Unicorn India Ventures, is proud to be an early backer of OrbitAid, and Unicorn India Ventures has congratulated the company on the opening of its state-of-the-art R&D facility.
ISRO has recently opened up to private players in the space ecosystem and will invite companies specializing in On-Orbit Servicing and Refueling (OOSR) technologies to work with the organisation in upcoming missions. OrbitAid's patented SIDRP is a key part of its efforts to achieve these goals.
In addition, OrbitAid will strengthen collaborations with local universities, startups, and global partners. The company is also developing a fuel station in space for efficient refueling and maintenance of satellites.
With this new R&D facility, OrbitAid Aerospace is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of India's space industry and contributing to global space sustainability efforts.
