Straight Up: MG S5 EV - Budget-Friendly EV SUV with Solid Performance and Space Galore

Spacious New Electric SUV Offers Efficient Fuel Utilization

Get a load of the MG S5 EV, the newest budget-friendly electric SUV in town! While it's not quite the bargain basement special from China, it sure packs a punch when it comes to affordability, decent driving range, and plenty of space.

You can only grab one online, but don't worry, MG has been swiftly setting up dealerships across Europe. And they've got the numbers to back it up - raking in almost 21,000 car sales in Germany alone last year, making MG the most successful Chinese automaker on the continent.

Economical and Efficient

Brace yourself, as the S5 EV holds its own among the big boys like the VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, BYD Atto 3, and Ford Explorer. The base model starts at €38,000, but if you want a longer range, that'll set you back €43,000.

If money is tight, consider leasing, as nearly 90% of EV owners do. For a four-year lease with 20,000 km, the base model costs €259 per month, while the top-of-the-line model is around €339 per month. Still, these rates are not exactly the best deals around, with competitors offering twice the range for similar rates.

Charging Speeds: Hit or Miss?

The base model's charging speed is a bit of a letdown, maxing out at 3.7 kW at home or public chargers, and a more reasonable 7.2 kW at 22 kW chargers. But guess what? The long-range version charges at up to 140 kW at DC stations and 11 kW at AC chargers, putting it on par with the big boys of the electric SUV world.

Space for Days

The inside of the S5 EV is nothing short of outstanding. Its larger body and longer wheelbase make for a roomy cabin, especially in the rear, and it's not hard to imagine fitting three child seats comfortably. A spacious trunk, plus easy-to-use technology round out the package. Just don't forget that there's no frunk, so the cable needs to go in the trunk.

Time for an Upgrade?

It's clear that the MG S5 EV is not without its imperfections. Comfortable ride, good economy, well designed tech - but the seats are too soft, the driver display is hard to read in bright light, and the brakes could use some work. But fret not, MG regularly updates its models every six months to iron out these kinks and improve the overall experience.
