Spotify Fraud: Authorities Arrest 'Operation Out of Tune' Suspect
Authorities have arrested an individual involved in a large-scale streaming fraud, dubbed 'Operation Out of Tune'. The suspect uploaded over 400 fake tracks to Spotify, generating substantial revenue and amassing assets worth over US$400,000 before their arrest.
The arrested individual, whose identity remains unknown, was found to have stolen 36 tracks from local composers, exploiting promotional WhatsApp groups to gain access to the music. They then uploaded these tracks, along with hundreds of fake ones, to various digital streaming platforms (DSPs), including YouTube Music.
The suspect's actions resulted in over US$65,000 in earnings, with authorities seizing assets totaling over US$400,000. The investigation also revealed the use of artificial intelligence to generate fake music tracks. This is not an isolated incident; another individual was previously arrested for generating over 28 million fake plays on streaming services, including YouTube Music.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has condemned such practices, with its CEO stating that streaming manipulation is a form of theft that betrays fans. Pro-Música Brasil has praised the successful operation against stream manipulation.
The arrest in Operation Out of Tune highlights the growing issue of streaming fraud, with significant financial gains and assets seized. The use of AI in generating fake music tracks further underscores the sophistication of these crimes. Music industry bodies continue to urge vigilance and stricter enforcement to combat this deception.
