Let's dive into the astonishing issue of time theft in German businesses, a problem as common as it is vexing. Over 70% of employers have already caught bogus working hour statements, according to a recent survey by Consumerfieldwork on behalf of TimO, a trusted provider of time tracking solutions.

Adding fuel to the fire, seven out of ten workers admit to indulging in personal matters during office hours. Breaks are often misrecorded, transforming time theft from an isolated instance into a systemic issue across many companies.

Employers worry about potentially substantial revenue losses due to inaccurate time tracking. A staggering 70% express concerns about financial damages, and nearly a third fear losses of over 10% of their turnover. Worryingly, 10% of employers believe losses could reach up to 20%, while 7% expect up to 30%. To prevent such financial perils, 80% of companies adopt digital time tracking systems that make manipulations more difficult. However, dealing with time theft is a sensitive matter, with 65% of employers initially opting for a clarifying conversation before resorting to harsher measures like warnings or dismissals.

The survey shows that Generation Z employees are more likely to handle personal matters during office hours, approximately thrice as often as their peers from other generations. These lax time-recording habits, if unchecked, can undermine company productivity and damage trust within teams.

The shift to working from home doesn't seem to mitigate the problem either. Although employees working remotely tend to record their working hours more accurately, they are more inclined to overlook break times. 36% of home-office workers fail to log their breaks, compared to 20% of those working outside their homes. Furthermore, 82% of those working from home engage in personal activities during work hours, significantly higher than the average of 71%.

Employees commit time theft for a range of reasons, with unpaid overtime being the most common (cited by 32% of respondents). Other reasons include dissatisfaction with working conditions (16%) and personal obligations (13%).
