Warning Issued: Telekom Customers Targeted in Phishing Scam
Telekom customers are being warned about a new phishing scam that threatens to block their phone numbers if they do not update their IBAN (bank account information) as instructed in a fraudulent email.
The scam emails, which are not from Telekom, are titled "Final Reminder Before Your Phone Number is Blocked." They often appear impersonal, with a "Dear Sir/Madam" greeting, and mention a "T-Online account," which is no longer a Telekom product. The emails claim that after a system update, the IBAN is no longer synchronized with the T-Online account.
The emails also contain a link, which should not be clicked, and a deadline for updating data in 24 hours. Under no circumstances should the link in the email be clicked or personal data be provided. The address provided at the end of the email does not exist.
This phishing tactic is designed to pressure victims into providing sensitive financial data under the pretense of avoiding service interruption. Email phishing remains a common vector for such attacks, sometimes enhanced by URL-based threats that lead to fake websites designed to harvest personal and banking information.
Telekom has warned its customers about this scam through notifications on the "Mein Magenta" app and emphasizes the importance of high-security standards and anti-phishing protections in its legitimate email services. Authorities and consumer protection organizations recommend not responding to such emails, avoiding clicking on links, and instead forwarding suspicious messages to official entities like Verbraucherzentrale (Consumer Advice Center) for analysis.
No official Telekom communication demands IBAN updates via email with blocking threats; thus, such messages should be regarded as scams. Users should verify communications through Telekom’s official channels or the secure Telekom Mail app but never provide sensitive banking details in response to unsolicited emails.
Customers are advised to check their emails carefully, not click on any suspicious links, and be wary of these emails. If you suspect you have received a phishing email, do not interact with it and report it immediately to Telekom and the relevant authorities.
