Telstra Outage Causes Communication Disruption in Southern NSW

A significant outage affecting Telstra services in southern New South Wales has disrupted internet and phone coverage for thousands of customers, including local businesses and health providers. The outage, which occurred due to an incident at an exchange site after 1pm, has caused widespread inconvenience and hindered communication in the region [1].

The disruption affected more than 100,000 services, stretching from Nowra to Eden and inland to Bombala. Local businesses such as the Greenwell Point Bowling and Sports Club had to accept cash payments due to disrupted internet access, while health providers like Pambula Hospital, South East Regional Hospital, and Eden Community Health reported disrupted phone services [1].

Cambewarra Public School also experienced disrupted internet and phone access. Crews were quickly deployed to resolve the issue, which affected 99 other base stations across the region [1].

Despite the disruption, emergency calls were not affected by the outage. Services have since come back online, with the Southern NSW Local Health District confirming that services came back online earlier than the expected restoration time of 6pm, and a Telstra spokesperson stating that services have been coming back online since 1:45pm and are now fully restored [1].

It is worth noting that this outage is not the first time Telstra customers in the region have been affected. A separate Telstra outage affected thousands of customers across the state last week following a severe weather event [1].

The outage underscores the vulnerability of relying heavily on single-network infrastructure for essential community functions. The disruption of critical services like phone and internet connectivity highlights the importance of having backup systems and redundancies in place to ensure uninterrupted communication and digital operations [1].
