Tesla achieves new sales milestone in South Korea, with the Model Y maintaining its top spot for a third consecutive month.

Tesla's Dominance in South Korea's EV Market

In a significant shift for the electric vehicle (EV) market, Tesla has established a strong foothold in South Korea. The American automaker has become the leading imported EV brand, accounting for an impressive 72% of all imported EV registrations as of mid-2025.

This dominance can be attributed to the successful launch and strong sales of the updated Model Y, which secured a 20% share of the country's imported car market. The Model Y's popularity is soaring, with the vehicle holding the title of the best-selling imported vehicle for three consecutive months.

Tesla's success in South Korea is a result of strategic supply timing, strong brand recognition, and increasing local charging infrastructure compatible with Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). Despite the South Korean government's subsidy reductions earlier in 2024, Tesla has managed to maintain its position. Furthermore, easing trade barriers under Korea-U.S. agreements have facilitated increased U.S. car imports, bolstering Tesla's sales.

The impact of Tesla's dominance is evident in the surge of overall EV adoption in South Korea. The EV market share among imported cars has risen significantly, contributing to expanding EV sales even in a traditionally volatile market environment. Tesla's market share growth also reflects a shift in consumer preference towards its vehicles over domestic competitors, with Tesla ranking as the number one imported car brand.

In comparison to Europe, Tesla faces contrasting dynamics. While Tesla is surging in South Korea, European markets such as Germany, Sweden, and Spain have experienced declining Tesla registrations due to increased local EV competition, reduced government incentives for EVs, and consumer disapproval linked to Elon Musk's political activities. Europe presents more competitive and fragmented EV landscapes, whereas Tesla's strategic product launches and ecosystem integration have yielded stronger footholds in South Korea.

In July 2025, Tesla set a new monthly sales record in South Korea, delivering 7,357 vehicles. This follows a record-breaking June, where Tesla topped South Korea's imported car sales leaderboard for the first time since entering the market. The Model 3 is also performing strongly in South Korea, ranking second among imported EVs.

Tesla's strong performance in South Korea is not limited to the Model Y. In June, Tesla sold 6,570 vehicles, surpassing Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Tesla has secured a 20% share of the entire imported car market in South Korea, making it the top-selling imported car brand.

In a heartfelt post on X, Tesla acknowledged its South Korean customers, expressing gratitude for their role in the company's mission. Tesla's success in South Korea's growing EV sector is expected to continue. Electric vehicles represented 33.8% of all imported car sales in South Korea in May, up 62.2% year-over-year. The Model Y has maintained its lead for three consecutive months in South Korea.
