Tesla Agrees on a $16.5 Billion Deal with Samsung for Manufacturing AI6 Processors
Tesla and Samsung Announce Groundbreaking AI6 Chip Deal
In a significant move for the tech industry, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed a deal worth $16.5 billion with Samsung to produce the automotive giant's next-generation AI chip, the AI6. This deal was announced by Musk in a post on X, and marks a consolidation of Tesla's computing roadmap, taking the best of Dojo and earlier chips to enable next-generation AI capabilities.
The AI6 chip represents a major architectural leap compared to the previous AI4 and AI5 chips. It will unify compute platforms across Tesla's product ecosystem, including vehicles, Optimus humanoid robots, and data centers. The chip's production will take place at Samsung's new semiconductor fab in Taylor, Texas, with Elon Musk personally overseeing production line optimizations to accelerate the pace of progress.
One of the key features of the AI6 chip is the unified Dojo architecture, which enables seamless hardware and software synergy across Tesla products. Manufacturing on an advanced 2nm process by Samsung is also expected to result in higher transistor density, performance, and energy efficiency. The AI6 chip is versatile and scalable, capable of powering not just Tesla vehicles but also Optimus robots and high-performance AI training in data centers.
In comparison to the AI4 and AI5 chips, the AI6 chip integrates Tesla’s Dojo Supercomputer architecture directly into vehicle hardware, creating a single unified AI ecosystem for both training (in data centers) and inference (in vehicles and robots). This eliminates the need for separate hardware pipelines and software languages, drastically simplifying development and accelerating innovation and updates.
The AI5 chip, currently being produced by TSMC, is seen as powerful enough that Tesla may need to limit its output due to U.S. export controls on AI computing power. The AI6 chip’s deployment in vehicles may come after initial adoption in Optimus robots and Dojo systems around 2028, reflecting a phased rollout strategy.
This strategic collaboration between Tesla and Samsung underscores Tesla’s focus on vertical integration in chip manufacturing. The long-term value of the deal, as per Elon Musk, is likely to be "several times higher." The strategic importance of this deal, according to Musk, is hard to overstate, as it has significant implications for Tesla's long-term vision for autonomy and robotics.
