Tesla Expands Autonomous Ride-Hailing Network with New Austin Facility

Tesla has leased a 293,000 square foot facility in Austin, Texas, marking another move to grow its real estate portfolio in the Lone Star State. The new facility, located at 11801 Decker Lane, Austin, within the Austin Hills Commerce Center, will primarily support the development, testing, and expansion of Tesla's autonomous robotaxi fleet.

The Austin location serves as a key proving ground for Tesla's robotaxi technology due to Texas's supportive regulatory environment for autonomous vehicles. The facility is instrumental in preparing and scaling driverless vehicle services, allowing Tesla to operate fully driverless rides without human supervisors, aiming to eventually cover large portions of the U.S. population.

The new facility is approximately 10 km (6 miles) from Giga Texas, which handles production of the Model Y, the Cybertruck, and battery components. Giga Texas is expected to play a central role in future autonomous vehicle assembly and deployment, as well as Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus.

The lease for the new facility was officially signed on May 14, with occupancy set to begin on June 1. The robotaxi service in Austin, initially limited to certain parts of the city, is reportedly set to launch on June 12.

Tesla's Austin area operations are bolstered by nearby advanced chip supply arrangements with Samsung, helping produce the AI chips needed for these autonomous vehicles. The facility and related infrastructure in Austin also link to broader Tesla manufacturing and technology efforts.

The Texas market has become a cornerstone for Tesla, with the company centralizing manufacturing, software development, and service infrastructure in the state. Tesla already operates more than 11 million square feet of space in the greater Austin area, in addition to facilities in other Texas cities such as Kyle, Taylor, Hutto, and Houston.

The new facility adds to Tesla's efforts to develop and expand its autonomous ride-hailing network, which currently operates in Austin as a pilot and plans to open to the general public by September 2025. The Austin location will play a crucial role in Tesla's plans to launch a paid robotaxi service within a few weeks and eventually provide autonomous ride-hailing services to a significant portion of the U.S. population.

However, there has been no word yet on what Tesla will use the new facility for beyond the development and expansion of its autonomous robotaxi fleet. Tesla has begun driverless testing in Austin using Model Y vehicles, and the launch of the robotaxi service in Austin marks a milestone in Tesla's autonomous vehicle efforts.

The Austin Hills Commerce Center is an industrial park currently under development by the Sansone Group. The lease news was reported by the Austin Business Journal, citing sources with knowledge of the deal.

  1. In the pursuit of expanding its autonomous ride-hailing network, Tesla will invest in the newly leased 293,000 square foot facility located in Austin, Texas.
  2. Aside from the development and expansion of its autonomous robotaxi fleet, Tesla is also exploring the application of technology in the new facility, potentially involving the use of advanced AI chips provided by nearby suppliers, such as Samsung.
