Tesla Unveils New Full Self-Driving Model, Aiming for Autonomous Future

Tesla is set to release a new Full Self-Driving (FSD) software update, version 14, in approximately six weeks from early August 2025. This update, anticipated to be rolled out in mid-to-late September, promises a significant leap in autonomous driving technology for the electric vehicle giant.

The new FSD v14 is currently undergoing testing with Tesla employees and limited deployment on Tesla Robotaxi vehicles operating in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. The update boasts a 10x increase in neural network parameters, aiming for dramatically improved safety and performance.

One of the key improvements is the exponential better safety that Tesla anticipates will allow the system to “nag” drivers less frequently while maintaining careful supervision. The update will also substantially reduce the need for driver attention during operation, though the driver must still take control in complex situations like heavy weather or unusual road events.

Tesla's approach remains focused on AI using cameras and neural networks without lidar, leveraging data from millions of Tesla drivers. The hardware installed since March 2019 (HW3 and later HW4) supports this advanced software.

However, it's important to note that the released FSD system is not yet fully autonomous (SAE Level 5); it still requires driver supervision. The Robotaxi program in Austin, using a more advanced but not publicly available version, operates without anyone in the driver’s seat but is not yet broadly deployed.

The new FSD model is linked to Tesla's robotaxi fleet and potential sales improvement, but its impact could be challenged by Elon Musk's global reputation, particularly in Europe. If Elon Musk's claim of a 10X increase in parameters for the new FSD model is true, it could represent a significant advancement in the technology.

The new FSD model includes video improvements and size upgrades, and its implementation could contribute to the growth of Tesla's robotaxi fleet. If testing is successful, the new FSD model may be released to the public as early as next month. The success of the new FSD model could potentially boost Tesla's robotaxi fleet and sales, but its impact is uncertain due to external factors.
