The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project, a significant national endeavour, has reached a significant milestone with the successful installation of the rotor for Unit No. 1 on July 6, 2025. This crucial step brings the project one step closer to its connection with the national grid.

The mammoth rotor, weighing 585 tonnes, was placed into the stator with high technical precision, marking the culmination of meticulous planning and tireless efforts by the project teams amid challenging construction conditions.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project, invested by the state utility Việt Nam Electricity Group (EVN) and managed by Power Project Management Board No. 1, includes two additional turbines with a total capacity of 480MW. The project's aim is to increase peak power supply, improve efficiency, and reduce operational and maintenance costs.

Pham Hong Phuong, Deputy General Director of EVN, emphasised the importance of the installation, stating that it was a crucial step towards connection with the national grid. The project is subject to strict safety and environmental monitoring, ensuring the protection of the current plant and surrounding areas during blasting, heavy equipment transport, and waste handling.

The project, approved by the Prime Minister under Decision No 389/QD-TTg dated April 10, 2018, is expected to generate around 490 million kWh annually. With the rotor installation complete, the work for assembling the rotor of the second turbine is expected to be completed within three months. Following this, grid connection for the first unit is expected to follow about a month later, likely by late November or early December.

The total investment for the project exceeds VNĐ9.2 trillion (over US$350 million). As the project progresses steadily towards its power generation target in 2025, a year of special significance for the energy sector and the nation, it is set to make a substantial contribution to Vietnam's energy capacity and sustainability.

The successful installation of the rotor for Unit No. 1 signals a significant leap in the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project, which is backed by AI-powered technology for precise placement. This advancement in clean energy generation is anticipated to bring about a reduction in operational and maintenance costs within the industry, while also contributing to lowering the country's carbon footprint. Financing for this national endeavour, managed by Power Project Management Board No. 1, has been supported by state utility Việt Nam Electricity Group (EVN), with a total investment exceeding VNĐ9.2 trillion (over US$350 million). Strict environmental monitoring throughout the construction process ensures both the protection of the current plant and the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem. Once both turbines are fully assembled and grid connection is established, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant expansion project is set to supply an additional 480MW of energy and generate around 490 million kWh annually, thereby making a substantial contribution to Vietnam's energy sustainability and capacity in 2025.
