U.S. Space Force Boosts Capabilities with New 'System Deltas'
The U.S. Space Force is bolstering its capabilities with the establishment of several new mission-focused acquisition units, dubbed 'System Deltas'. These units aim to enhance communication between acquisition officers and operational commanders, accelerating the delivery of space systems.
The first System Deltas were launched in late 2023, with more activations planned throughout the year. By the end of 2025, the Space Force plans to have up to 10 operational System Deltas. These units will cover critical areas such as satellite communications and combat power.
The planned activations for the remainder of the year include System Deltas for Satellite Communications, Combat Power, Position, Navigation & Timing, and Assured Access to Space. Already activated in 2025 are units focused on Space Sensing, Space-based Sensing & Targeting, Space Domain Awareness/Battle Management, and Operational Test & Training Infrastructure. Each System Delta is led by a colonel who coordinates directly with a Mission Delta counterpart in the Space Operations Command.
The establishment of these System Deltas reflects the Space Force's shift towards preparing for real-world space conflicts. By streamlining acquisitions and ensuring systems meet operational needs, these units aim to strengthen the U.S. military's position in the space domain. Despite recent workforce cuts, the Space Systems Command is restructuring to ensure program offices have the necessary contracting officers.
