Uber Expands Services in Germany with New Courier Option

Berlin - Global ride-hailing and food delivery service Uber has announced the launch of a new courier service in Germany, dubbed 'Uber Courier'. The service, which is available immediately in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart, and Mannheim, serves as an expansion of Uber's operational footprint, offering both personal and business goods transport.

Uber's official statement highlights the convenience and efficiency of the service, aiming to simplify daily life and provide additional support for local businesses. This logistics initiative leverages the company's existing delivery network, with couriers utilizing a bicycle or a car, depending on the shipment's size and distance. Each shipment should not exceed 60 kilograms, with an individual parcel not weighing more than 20 kilograms.

'Uber Courier' costs are displayed upfront in the app, calculated based on travel time and distance. The company's Germany CEO, Christoph Weigler, emphasizes the service's potential benefits for local small businesses, enabling quick and efficient delivery of ordered items within cities.

Since entering the German market eleven years ago, Uber has faced criticisms from taxi associations, unions, and parts of the political establishment over its business models and working conditions at partner companies. However, Uber's recent decision to open its app to all taxi companies in Germany has been well-received, with around 20 percent of taxis in cities like Berlin now cooperating with Uber, and over 4,000 taxi drivers nationwide participating.

The introduction of Uber Courier appears to be a positive development for urban logistics, focusing on convenience, affordability, and seamless app integration. It does not directly position itself as a competitor to traditional taxi services for passenger transport but rather as an added logistics option for goods and parcels. This expansion in the logistics and delivery sector may further solidify Uber's presence in the country and strengthen its partnership with the taxi industry.

With the new 'Uber Courier' service, technology integrates into sports logistics, offering faster delivery for sports goods in cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Mannheim. The expansion of Uber's services in Germany not only caters to personal needs but also supports local businesses, including sports stores, by ensuring efficient delivery of their goods.
