In a major development for the driverless robotaxi market, Uber, Lucid Motors, and Nuro have announced a partnership to launch over 20,000 Level 4 autonomous robotaxis starting in 2026. This collaboration aims to revolutionise the transportation industry by delivering high asset utilization, favourable operating costs, proven safety, and global scalability.

The new fleet of robotaxis will utilise Lucid's new Gravity electric SUV, which boasts a long 450-mile EPA estimated range, integrated with Nuro’s AI-powered Level 4 self-driving system called the Nuro Driver™. This combination is expected to set new standards in the robotaxi sector.

Uber, with its ride-hailing platform operating in 70 countries and facilitating an average of 34 million trips per day, will leverage its scale to maximise the benefits of autonomous rides. Nuro will lead rigorous safety development and validation involving simulations, closed-course, and supervised on-road testing to ensure safe operation.

The race for driverless robotaxis is becoming increasingly competitive, with traditional leaders like Waymo, Cruise, Baidu, and Tesla also actively expanding deployments in the U.S. and China. Notably, Waymo is currently operating autonomous taxi services in multiple cities. Tesla, too, is advancing its robotaxi service, having launched a limited service in Austin, Texas, with safety drivers still onboard. Elon Musk announced plans to allow Tesla vehicle owners to add their own cars to Tesla’s robotaxi network in 2026, potentially enabling private fleet management.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi believes autonomous vehicles have the potential to transform cities for the better. The rollout of Uber's robotaxi service is scheduled to begin in a single US city in 2026, marking a significant new phase in the development of autonomous transportation. This represents a significant investment by Uber in the robotaxi sector, with the purchase of 20,000 Lucid vehicles.

The agreement with Nuro adds to Uber's existing relationships with other firms in the self-driving technology industry, positioning the company as a key player in the rapidly evolving world of autonomous transportation. As the race for driverless robotaxis continues, it is clear that innovation and collaboration will be key to shaping the future of urban mobility.

As part of their significant investment in the robotaxi sector, Uber plans to leverage its scale and ride-hailing expertise to optimize benefits from autonomous rides, aiming to revolutionize the transportation business through this collaboration. The new fleet of robotaxis, set to launch in 2026, will utilize Lucid's Gravity electric SUV integrated with Nuro’s AI-powered Level 4 self-driving system, and is anticipated to redefine standards in the robotaxi industry, competing against other leading companies in the autonomous transportation market, such as Waymo, Cruise, Baidu, and Tesla, who are also expanding deployments globally.
