Ukraine Prepared to Overcome "Flamingo" in Matches in Moscow and St. Petersburg
Ukraine Unveils Long-Range Missile Complex "Flamingo"
Ukraine has unveiled a new cruise missile complex called "Flamingo" (FP-5), boasting a range of approximately 3,000 kilometers and a warhead weight of around 1,150 kilograms. The advanced missile system, which showcases an impressive array of capabilities, has the potential to significantly enhance Ukraine's stand-off strike capabilities and pose a substantial challenge to existing Russian air defense systems.
Key features of the Flamingo missile complex include:
- Long Range: With a range of up to 3,000 kilometers, the Flamingo missile system surpasses the range of Western Tomahawk Block V missiles and far exceeds Storm Shadow missiles.
- Warhead: The Flamingo's warhead weighs around 1 ton (1,000–1,150 kg), making it twice the size of Tomahawk or Storm Shadow warheads, thereby increasing its destructive potential.
- Speed: The Flamingo cruises at a speed of 850–900 km/h, comparable to Western cruise missiles.
- Size and Weight: The Flamingo is a large missile, with a wingspan of 6 meters and a take-off weight of around 6,000 kg, making it significantly heavier than other similar missiles.
- Guidance: The Flamingo utilizes a jamming-resistant satellite navigation system combined with inertial navigation, allowing it to strike targets deep into Russian territory with high accuracy.
The Flamingo's long range allows strikes deep within Russian territory, potentially reaching industrial and military infrastructure as far as Novosibirsk, beyond the reach of many Western systems. Its large size and weight make it more visible to radar, which might ease detection and interception by Russian air defenses. However, the electronic warfare-resistant navigation and planned use in large quantities aim to overwhelm defenses.
Ukrainian experts acknowledge that some Flamingo missiles will be intercepted but emphasize the strategic value of combined strikes using multiple weapon types to saturate and bypass Russian air defenses. The missile's simplified design prioritizes faster production capacity, with Ukraine aiming to manufacture thousands per year, potentially increasing its strategic significance.
The Flamingo missile complex's appearance demonstrates Ukraine's ability to develop its own long-range strike capabilities. The similarity of the Flamingo to the FP-5 suggests potential external influences or collaborations in its development. If the declared characteristics of the Flamingo are confirmed, it would allow Kyiv to target central and even eastern Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The origin of the Flamingo missile complex remains Ukraine, as previously stated. Details about the guidance system and other characteristics of the Flamingo missile, apart from its similarity to the FP-5, are not yet disclosed. A video of the Flamingo missile's launch from towed launchers was published by the Ukrainian publication "Ukrainian Truth".
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has stated that official information about the Flamingo missile will be published "at the right time". The first mention of the Flamingo missile was on the Facebook page of Associated Press photographer Efrem Lukatsky. The reporting about the Flamingo missile is based on media reports from TWZ, translated by Charter97.org.
