BYD Expands Ocean Series with New Vehicles
Chinese automaker BYD is pushing forward with its mission to accelerate the electrification of vehicles, as it unveils three new models under its Ocean series. The upcoming vehicles—the Seal, Sea Lion, and Seagull—are set to offer consumers a variety of choices, each with its unique features and positioning.
The BYD Seal is a medium-sized sedan scheduled to be unveiled in March 2022, followed by the Sea Lion in the third quarter of 2022, and the Seagull between June and July 2022.
The BYD Sea Lion 06, officially launched in China on July 24, 2025, is a mid-size SUV available in both battery-electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) variants. Based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 Evo for the EV and the 5th-generation DM hybrid technology for the PHEV, the Sea Lion 06 boasts modern design cues from the Ocean series, including a closed front face with parallel headlights and a wavy taillight design. It is equipped with the advanced "God’s Eye" C (DiPilot 100) driving assistance system, and pricing starts around 139,800 yuan (~$19,540) for the hybrid and slightly higher for the EV variants.
The BYD Sea Lion 7 is a mid-size pure electric SUV built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0. It is expected to have a range exceeding 500 km with blade batteries and advanced driver assistance. The Sea Lion 7 has already been launched in Malaysia in 2024, with pre-orders starting in January 2024, and event launches in February 2024 for that market. While the global or China launch date is yet to be officially announced, the model will gradually enter Southeast Asian markets, including Malaysia, in 2024, expanding BYD's footprint.
As for the BYD Seagull, details are yet to be confirmed, but based on BYD's naming and typical lineup strategy, it is expected to be a smaller, more affordable electric vehicle positioned below the Seal and Sea Lion in size and price within the Ocean series. The pricing of the Seagull is expected to be lower than that of the already available BYD Dolphin, indicating a plan to reduce the entry pricing for the Ocean series.
The design concept for the vehicles in the marine series is "Marine Aesthetics," with waves and flowing lines as the main focus. BYD has named its vehicles in the Ocean series after marine animals such as dolphins, sea lions, and others. The brand has introduced a product plan for its marine biological cars during the pre-sale conference of the BYD Dolphin.
