Uncovering Details: Investigation on the Matter at Hand
In an interview with Sina Tech, Tianyuan (Sawyer) Li, General Manager of Industrial Design at Xiaomi Auto and Vice Chairman of the Xiaomi Group Design Committee, revealed the design philosophy behind the company's innovative vehicles. Li emphasised the importance of creating an emotional experience that transcends matching functional specifications, aiming to leave a lasting, irreplaceable impression on users.
At the heart of Xiaomi Auto's design philosophy are three guiding principles: Design in accordance with science, Design in accordance with natural laws, and Design in accordance with intuition. These principles serve as a framework during all stages of the design process, ensuring alignment with Xiaomi's core values.
Xiaomi Auto's unique approach to innovation is evident in the contrast between the outer appearance of their vehicles—often classic and well-proportioned—and the inner experience, which is described as completely new and futuristic. This contrast is a key part of Xiaomi's design style, emphasising a fresh sensory and emotional interaction with the vehicle.
The company's design process involves deep collaboration, particularly with CEO Lei Jun, who actively participated in intensive workshops to co-create the product alongside designers. This co-creation, combining a tech company mindset with product development and user perspectives, is what enabled Xiaomi Auto to achieve innovative breakthroughs and a "0 to 1" creation from scratch, differentiating it from more conventional automotive design workflows.
One of the latest additions to Xiaomi's vehicle lineup is the Xiaomi SU7, which began European road testing with the vehicle registered in Munich. The YU7 SUV, an evolution and reinvention of Xiaomi's design language, is designed to withstand the test of time.
Despite some visual comparisons to high-end European models, such as the Porsche Taycan and Ferrari Purosangue SUV, Xiaomi's vehicles have not been negatively impacted by these discussions. In fact, the humorous nicknames like "Mi-shijie" and "Fala-mi" that have emerged on Chinese social media may have contributed to increased interest in Xiami's vehicles.
Li did not respond directly to the nicknames but emphasised Xiaomi's focus on delivering emotionally connecting designs. This focus is reflected in the Xiaomi design team's use of the guiding ideas during all phases of the design process to ensure consistency with Xiaomi's values.
Looking towards the future, a Xiaomi YU9 SUV prototype has been spotted, and it is likely to be a full-size SUV EREV with a 1,500 km range. As Xiaomi Auto continues to push the boundaries of automotive design, they remain committed to delivering vehicles that offer an unparalleled emotional experience.
This week's Sunday China Drive at Car News China will review the Xiaomi YU7 from a first-person perspective, providing a closer look at how Xiaomi is revolutionising the auto industry with its unique design philosophy.
In the vein of Xiaomi Auto's unique approach to automotive design, the integration of technology and finance could potentially broaden their scope, offering innovative financial services within their vehicles.
Moreover, collaboration with industries such as transportation and technology could lead to the development of smart, self-driving vehicles, further differentiating Xiaomi's designs from traditional automotive counterparts.
