In a bid to enhance passenger experience, WestJet and United Airlines have joined the ranks of major airlines embracing SpaceX's Starlink technology for in-flight WiFi. However, each airline faces unique challenges in their rollout.

WestJet, in partnership with Telus, has launched its Starlink-powered WiFi service. While the service is now available, it's not yet fully implemented across all aircraft. The airline aims to complete installations on its narrowbody aircraft by 2025 and on its widebody fleet by 2026, indicating a phased rollout rather than a completed one as of mid-2025.

In a positive development, WestJet announced plans to offer free inflight Wi-Fi via Starlink from July 2024, suggesting the service rollout is still in progress and expanding. Preliminary testing on a WestJet flight out of Calgary showed download speeds between 150 and 200 Mbps, significantly higher than traditional in-flight internet services.

United Airlines, one of the first major airlines to adopt Starlink for in-flight connectivity, has also faced challenges. Last month, a static issue surfaced on Embraer E175 aircraft, caused by interference between the Starlink antenna and an antenna used by pilots for air traffic control communications. The issue, however, has been "pretty much resolved" according to the company, with the repositioning of satellite equipment necessary to avoid signal overlap.

United Airlines' Starlink-powered in-flight internet service offers average download speeds of over 200Mbps, significantly higher than traditional in-flight internet services. The airline plans to equip its entire fleet with Starlink, though a detailed timeline for completion has not been shared. Availability of Starlink on United Airlines flights will vary depending on aircraft type and route.

As both WestJet and United Airlines continue to implement Starlink technology, they join a growing list of airlines aiming to provide high-speed, reliable internet connectivity to passengers, transforming the in-flight experience.

Science and space-and-astronomy are evident in the new Starlink technology utilized by WestJet and United Airlines for in-flight WiFi, showcasing the integration of technology within the aviation industry. SpaceX's Starlink satellite network is revolutionizing passenger experiences by delivering high-speed downloads, leapfrogging traditional in-flight internet services in both airlines' plans.
