Upcoming Electric Vehicles Worth Anticipating This Week
Honda is making a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) market with the development of a dedicated EV platform and a new operating system called Asimo. This technological leap will power more sophisticated driver-assist tech and an AI voice assistant.
The spotlight, however, is on the Acura RSX Prototype, Acura's first fully in-house engineered EV. Set to debut during Monterey Car Week 2025 and go on sale in the second half of 2026, the RSX Prototype marks a new chapter as the first EV built on Honda’s new global EV platform. It will be produced at Honda’s EV Hub in Marysville, Ohio, alongside the Acura Integra, showcasing flexible manufacturing capable of making internal combustion, hybrid, and electric models together.
Design and Styling
The RSX Prototype boasts a striking "Propulsion Yellow Pearl" finish, a sleek coupe-like fastback roofline, and an aggressive front fascia inspired by the Acura Performance EV Concept. It features a distinctive split-headlight design, flush door handles, flared wheel wells, and a ducktail-style integrated rear spoiler. The vehicle rides on large 21-inch multi-spoke rims with bright red Brembo brake calipers.
Performance and Platform
As a premium performance SUV, the RSX Prototype comes equipped with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain and a sport-tuned double-wishbone front suspension. Although specific battery capacity and range details are yet to be disclosed, the vehicle supports DC fast charging and offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, enabling users to power external devices and even use it as mobile energy storage or backup power for homes during blackouts.
Technology and Software
The RSX introduces Acura’s entry into the "Software Defined Vehicle" era with the proprietary ASIMO OS. This system integrates automated driving, advanced driver assistance, infotainment, and other vehicle systems, learning driver habits to personalize the experience. Over-the-air software updates will continuously add new features.
Manufacturing
Production of the RSX will begin late 2025 at Honda’s new EV Hub in Ohio, emphasizing domestic and globally sourced parts, and highlighting the flexibility of building EVs alongside combustion and hybrid models.
Launch Timing
The prototype was revealed in August 2025 at Monterey Car Week, with a production model expected in the second half of 2026.
The RSX revives the iconic RSX nameplate with a modern electric SUV that promises to blend Acura’s traditional performance DNA with next-generation EV technology and design. Interior details remain under wraps as of the 2025 debut.
Meanwhile, other automakers are also making strides in the EV market. Mercedes-Benz, for instance, is pivoting towards more commonality between its electric and combustion models, starting with the 2026 CLA-Class compact sedan. The German automaker is also introducing the EQS SUV, featuring a 329-mile range and a 107.8-kWh battery pack. The EQS SUV is expected to go on sale in the United States in the second half of 2022, competing with luxury EVs like the Tesla Model X and the BMW iX.
Hyundai, on the other hand, is set to address the lack of more-affordable EVs with the Ioniq 2. However, the Ioniq 2 may be too small for the U.S. market due to 15% tariffs on Korean cars and the elimination of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
In related news, the Ohio facilities will also build the Afeela 1 electric sedan for the Sony Honda Mobility joint venture. The GLC EV will incorporate the latest Mercedes operating system and is expected to have efficiency improvements similar to the CLA. The GLC EV will compete with the BMW iX3, representing Mercedes' latest EV tech.
Prototypes of the Ioniq 2 have already been spotted testing, while the new GLC EV, debuting at the IAA Mobility show, will have a complicated name (GLC with EQ Technology) and a unique grille comprised of 942 backlit dots. The RSX will be built in Ohio alongside Honda's own 0 Series EVs, including an SUV and a sedan based on vehicles shown at CES 2025.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, it's exciting to see these advancements in electric vehicle technology and design. The Acura RSX Prototype, with its sleek styling and cutting-edge technology, is a testament to Honda's commitment to the EV market. Stay tuned for more updates on these innovative vehicles!
