Urgent action required by True: Address internet disruption and reimburse affected customers, as per NBTC's instructions.
In the early hours of May 22, 2025, True Corporation experienced a significant nationwide internet outage that affected its fibre and mobile networks across Thailand. The disruption, which was reported on Downdetector, caused a drop in traffic of over 80% initially and took several hours to recover to normal levels [1].
The Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) swiftly took action, instructing True Corporation to provide an explanation of the issue and compensate customers who were unable to use the internet during the outage [2]. Trairat Viriyasirikul, acting secretary-general of the NBTC Office, issued the order.
True Corporation acknowledged the outage and issued an apology. The company attributed the problem to technical errors on its computer servers, though no official reason was given [1]. In response to the incident, True Corporation has been actively supporting affected customers, particularly those impacted by emergencies at the Thailand-Cambodia border in July 2025 [2]. The company offered affected monthly and prepaid customers 10 GB of free internet data, 100 free voice minutes, and extended payment deadlines. Additionally, True deployed mobile base stations and temporary sites to strengthen network coverage in evacuation centers and provided free WiFi and SIM cards for communication during the crisis.
The NBTC is overseeing the resolution of the issue, urging True Corporation to fix the outage as quickly as possible. No further compensation measures specific to the May outage were found in the search results. However, True's response has focused on restoring services and supporting customers through added internet and voice benefits in affected areas, alongside infrastructure enhancements to prevent future disruptions [2].
It is worth noting that this internet outage is not related to the leaders of South Korea and Vietnam pledging closer ties or the situation at Phu Makua between Thai and Cambodian leaders. The outage is also a separate incident from the Thai-Cambodian border returning to normal.
As of late July 2025, True Corporation continues to work diligently to ensure the stability of its network and to provide the best possible service to its customers in Thailand.
