US WTIV Vessel Arrives in Virginia, Preparing for Offshore Wind Turbine Installation during CVOW
The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project, the largest offshore wind project under construction in the US, took a significant step forward this month with the arrival of the first Jones Act-compliant wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV), named Charybdis, at Portsmouth Port on 17 September.
Commissioned by Dominion Energy, the Charybdis is a state-of-the-art vessel designed to handle current and next-generation wind turbines of 12 MW or larger. Built in the US by McDermott International, Charybdis boasts a 426-foot crane capable of lifting up to 2,200 tonnes, making it ideal for the installation of the CVOW project's 176 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW turbines.
The CVOW project, located 43 kilometres off the coast of Virginia Beach, will generate enough renewable energy to power up to 660,000 homes once completed. The first Coastal Virginia Offshore Substation has already been installed, a crucial component of the project.
The installation of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Substation was carried out by DEME, a leading global player in the offshore marine engineering and dredging market. This milestone marks a significant step for the CVOW project, which is set to become a major player in the US renewable energy sector.
OffshoreWIND.biz, a platform read by thousands of offshore wind professionals daily, offers options for increased visibility, storytelling, and expert showcasing through banners, branded articles, full-page company profiles, and a business directory. This provides an excellent opportunity for companies involved in the CVOW project to share their contributions and expertise with the wider offshore wind community.
As the CVOW project progresses, it will undoubtedly continue to attract attention and interest from the offshore wind industry and the general public alike. With its potential to power up to 660,000 homes, the project is a testament to the growing importance of renewable energy in the US and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead in the offshore wind sector.
