Vehicle Theft Surges 42% in Victoria: Major Brands Offer Stolen Vehicle Tracking
Vehicle theft in Victoria has surged by 42% in the past year, with over 33,000 motor vehicle thefts recorded. In response, several major car brands now offer vehicles with built-in Stolen Vehicle Tracking (SVT) systems, providing hope for quick recovery in case of theft.
SVT, also known as Stolen Vehicle Locator (SVL) or Vehicle Location Services (VLS), is a connectivity feature that can be built into a vehicle during manufacture or purchased as an aftermarket accessory. In Australia, major brands like Toyota, Lexus, Audi, Mazda, Tesla, Hyundai, Genesis, Mitsubishi, and Volvo offer vehicles with inbuilt SVT. Providers such as Intelematics also offer tracking services to various brands.
When a vehicle is stolen, promptly reporting it to the police is crucial. This activates the SVT system, allowing authorities to locate the vehicle. However, the exact process varies depending on the SVT service provider. It's essential to note that for safety reasons, one should not attempt to track down the stolen vehicle themselves.
With vehicle theft offences reaching 28,500 and attempted thefts at 4,500, SVT systems offer a beacon of hope. Although they cannot prevent theft, they significantly improve the chances of vehicle recovery. As more car brands integrate SVT into their vehicles, consumers can breathe a little easier knowing help is just a call away in case of theft.
