Veteran DSLR camera utilized by Photographer of the Year to snap award-winning image
In the world of photography, the 2025 All About Photo Awards served as a platform for global visual storytelling, showcasing the work of photographers from around the globe. The event, known as The Mind's Eye, celebrated the power of images to capture and convey powerful narratives.
One of the standout images was Abdelrahman Alkahlout's Stolen Innocence, which earned him the second place. The poignant image, captured with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, depicted a Palestinian medic preparing a young child's body for burial in a morgue amid the ongoing war in the region since 2023.
The first place, however, went to Marijn Fidder (The Netherlands) for her image Husnah. Husnah is part of the series Inclusive Nation, shedding light on disability rights, self-acceptance, and social progress in Uganda. The image, which also won Fidder the Photographer of the Year title, was captured using a Leica Q (Type 116) with a fixed 28mm f1.7 Summilux lens.
Husnah, Uganda's only classified Paralympic swimmer, made history at the World Championships in London in 2019. Her first appearance was among the International Paralympic Committee's Top 10 Moments of 2019. Husnah is a powerful representation of her journey and the progress Uganda has made in terms of disability rights.
Erhan Coral (Turkey) also made an impact with his image Hot Springs of Budaklí. The image, captured with a Nikon D850, depicts men and water buffaloes sharing the warmth of the Budaklí hot springs in Eastern Turkey. The scene, set in a winter landscape with rising mist veiling the frozen surroundings, captures a primal ritual of survival and coexistence in the thermal waters.
The DSLR cameras commonly used in significant photography awards and contests include the Nikon D850 and the Nikon D500, recognized as professional-grade DSLRs with advanced technology and excellent image quality. The D850, in particular, remains a landmark DSLR prized for its 45.7MP sensor that captures stunning detail, making it a frequent choice among stills-focused professional photographers.
Among Canon models, the Canon EOS 90D is noted for versatility and high resolution (32.5MP) in the APS-C DSLR category, offering fast shooting speeds and excellent autofocus performance, which supports the demands of contest-level photography. However, Canon’s top-tier models in recent years have largely shifted towards mirrorless, although DSLRs like the 90D still maintain relevance.
While newer mirrorless systems like the Nikon Z8 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II have gained prominence in recent years, traditional DSLRs like the Nikon D850 and D500 remain high on the list for significant awards and contests where DSLR cameras are still preferred or required.
In sum, Nikon’s D850 and D500 stand out as the top DSLRs consistently associated with significant photography awards and contests, while Canon’s EOS 90D serves as a strong competitor in the DSLR space, especially for APS-C shooters. For cutting-edge pro performance, mirrorless cameras are increasingly favored, but DSLRs like these still dominate many top-level competitions.
