Volkswagen's ID.1: Affordable Electric Compact Car Set for 2027
Volkswagen's ID.1, set to debut in 2025, is manufactured by SEAT, its sister company. This compact electric vehicle promises an appealing design, affordable price, and impressive range.
The ID.1 will be limited to 130 km/h to maximize its range, which is estimated to be at least 250 kilometers. This is made possible by a 35 kWh battery using LFP chemistry. Its production will take place outside Germany, with the VW plant in Palmela, Portugal, being the favored site.
The ID.1's interior offers ample space, comfortably seating four and boasting a rear compartment volume of 305 liters. VW's chief designer, Andreas Mindt, aimed for a bold yet accessible design, reminiscent of the first-generation VW Golf in proportions and the strong C-pillar at the rear.
The ID.1's appealing optics and targeted entry-level price of around 20,000 euros boost its sales prospects. It will launch in late 2027, following the similarly priced Renault Twingo. Measuring 3.88 meters in length and 1.82 meters in width, it's similar in size to the Beetle successor from 1974. The ID.1 will use a newly developed, efficient front-wheel drive with a peak performance of 70 kW or 95 PS.
The ID.1, with its attractive design, competitive price, and impressive range, is poised to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle market. Its production in Portugal and launch in late 2027 further solidify its position as a promising addition to VW's ID. series.
